| Welcome to the Antietam Partner Website The Western Maryland Interpretive Association (WMIA), the nonprofit cooperating association for Antietam National Battlefield, is proud to operate this site. The Sacrifice & Serenity of Antietam Preserving the hallowed ground at Sharpsburg, Maryland is a tribute to our nation and appropriate way to honor those who fought here on the bloodiest day in American history, September 17, 1862. The text on the Private Soldier Monument in Antietam National Cemetery –“Not for themselves but for their country”—aptly underscores the events of that day and why this special place should be protected and cared for. Preserving Your Antietam Battlefield Private funding is increasingly critical to park projects such as land acquisition, historic structure restoration and youth education. The nonprofit Antietam Partner program supports these and other battlefield initiatives.
